A well defined problem is half solved.

-Charles Kettering

Hi, I’m Garry, a Senior UI/UX Designer living in Savannah, GA and working for Tektonux based in Huntsville, Alabama. I am also an illustrator and educator having taught a wide variety of Design and illustration courses at the college level. Although I’m currently spending my days mostly making stuff in the DOD space, I previously spent nearly five years working on navigation and infotainment in the automotive space. I have designed and illustrated for a wide variety of companies including Marvel Comics, UpperDeck, DC Comics, Cryptozoic Entertainment, Tyco, Meridian Merchant Services, NNG and many others. I hold an MFA in 2D design and have experience in UX/UI Design, Print & Web Design, Illustration and education. PROCESS

Exploration

Projects begin with meetings to discuss the subject matter, existing assumptions, goals and audience. Questions and research are the dominant focus from the start with the intent of framing a clear design problem prior to suggesting a solution.

Results

  • A clear problem
  • Identified stakeholders
  • Established timeline
  • Creative Brief

    Ideation

Sketching and writing thoughts about the problem are the primary techniques used to identify solutions in this phase of development. It is common to go back and forth between Ideation and Exploration in the creative process.

    Results

    • Sketches of possible solutions
    • Notes regarding possible solutions
    • Workflows

    Evaluation

Presentation of suggested solutions and further refinement of the design problem should occur in this phase. The result may be to move to the Design phase or going back to either the Ideation or Exploration phases depending upon the stakeholder review.

    Results:

    • Meeting
    • Agreement on intended solutions

      Iteration

Refining sketches to a higher resolution clarifies issues not addressed or adequately considered in earlier phases while providing stakeholders with deliverables to evaluate.

      Results

      • Digital drafts of the design solution
      • Rough prototypes

      Presentation

The final phase of a project is the execution and presentation of the deliverables.

      Results

      • Production ready graphics
      • Prototoypes
      • Documentation

      ABOUT

I believe a lot of things:

      • The ability to learn is the the single most important and desirable skill.
      • Beauty is not in the eye of the beholder.
      • To make something fun or funny is almost always an improvement.
      • A well defined problem is half solved.
      • Design serves us best by providing solutions to problems.
      • Seeking truth rather than originality in our work is more likely to yield both.
      • Simple ain’t easy.
      • The borrower is slave to the lender.
      • “Stuff” makes life, and design, more complicated.
      • Happy is inferior to meaningful… so is cool.
